Jerome Uhing

Jerome Uhing, age 77 of Bow Valley, Nebraska, died on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at his residence.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 10:30 am at the Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church in Bow Valley with Rev. Eric Olsen officiating. Burial will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Bow Valley with military services conducted by the Wynot American Legion Post 31. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm at the church. The Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Nate Daily, Leah Uhing, Tessa Uhing, Ty Uhing, Adam Lund, Anthony Lund, +Aaron Lund, Taylor Vollmer, Turner Vollmer, Tommie Vollmer, Jason Wilcox and Marcus Wilcox.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Jerome was born on February 22, 1934 in Bow Valley, Nebraska to Joseph and Ida (Thoene) Uhing. He attended Bunker Hill School through 8th grade and obtained his GED while in the National Guard. He married Alice Borer on November 29, 1958 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Lindsay, Nebraska. Jerome served in the National Guard from 1958 to 1964. He was activated during the Berlin Crisis and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas from 1961 to 1962. He was the owner of Uhing Custom Cabinets since 1964 and also farmed southeast of Bow Valley until the late 1980's. He and Alice moved into Bow Valley in 1998. He built both their home on the farm as well as their present home in town.

Jerome was a member of the Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church in Bow Valley, a member of the Wynot American Legion Post 31, and a lifelong member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, serving as Chief Ranger for many years. Jerome was a member of the Bow Valley Park Association and crafted several of the birds used at the Schuetzenfest celebration. He derived many blessings as a member of the Oblates of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Norfolk and was active in Christians Encounter Christ (CEC) since 1975.

Jerome is admired by so many as a beautiful example of a Christian man, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a gentle man, with endless patience and a wonderful example of how we all should live life. Jerome always saw the good in people, treasured his family, and had a remarkable artistic talent. He was an extraordinary craftsman whose workmanship can be seen in homes, churches and businesses for miles around. He was loved by all who knew him. Heaven is blessed with his presence.

Jerome is survived by his wife Alice of Bow Valley; 6 children and their spouses, Ann and David Lund of Norfolk; Mike and Kathy Uhing of Bow Valley; Barb and Dennis Vollmer of Omaha; Cindy Uhing of Lady Lake, Florida; Linda and Ken Wilcox of Norfolk; Danny and Karla Uhing of Norfolk, 16 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a brother, Francis and Gail Uhing of Wynot; 4 sisters, Rita and Stanley Varilek of Tabor, South Dakota; Margaret and Charlie Bares of Tyndall, South Dakota; Irene and Leo Kocmich of Avon, South Dakota; Rosemary and David Folkers of Bow Valley and a sister in law, Sandy Uhing of Fordyce, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ida Uhing, step mother, Ann Uhing, an infant daughter, Mary Uhing, a grandson Aaron Lund, 2 brothers Leonard and Andrew Uhing, a sister, MaryAnn Uhing, and 3 infant grandchildren, Jamie Wilcox, Amanda Uhing, and Casey Vollmer.
