Larry Francis Schieffer

Larry Francis Schieffer, 83, died Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Banyan Montclair Nursing Home in Omaha, Nebraska.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 AM, on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton, South Dakota with Reverend Thi Pham officiating. Burial will be at Beaver Creek Cemetery in rural Crofton, Nebraska following a luncheon after the Mass. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, June 12 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a vigil service and rosary at 7:00 PM.

Larry was born March 4, 1943 to Norbert and Mary (Mueller) Schieffer at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. He attended Beaver Creek Country School (District #102) and graduated from Crofton High School in 1960. Larry graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education from Wayne State College in 1964, followed by a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of South Dakota in 1967. Larry began his teaching career at Plainview Public School, Plainview, NE; then Yankton Middle School and Floyd Valley High School in Alton, IA. Larry then worked in Yankton, drove bus for the Crofton School District for several years and later moved to Lincoln, NE where he worked and retired as a city bus driver.

Larry loved music from an early age; learning to play the piano first from his mother followed by instructions at the Johnny Matouska Music Store in Yankton. He was also greatly influenced by his Aunt Josie Tramp and her musical family, spending several summers working for their family truck farm business while learning to play several instruments including the accordion from his cousin Duane Tramp. Music played a large role in his high school years; exceling in choir and band and participating in many musical ensembles and contests. While living in Lincoln, Larry sang and performed in several community/church choirs, especially St. Mary’s Catholic Church Choir.

Larry was athletic and loved sports, especially baseball much like his dad. Baseball began at the farm, playing with his three brothers and neighborhood friends. Later, it was baseball with the Beaver Creek Team in the Cedar County League. In his retirement he loved to follow all kinds of baseball teams and umpired for many teams and leagues. Additionally, no one could ever seem to beat him in ping-pong and “Sheephead” was his game as Larry grew up in a card playing family! In his later years he was a champion cribbage player and remained undefeated to his brother Harley. Larry even played two games of cribbage with Harley on his last day while accusing him of cheating as well!

Larry is survived by one brother: Harley (Linda Kool) of Altoona, IA; one sister: Marcia (Marvin Jr) Olnes of Yankton; sisters-in-law, Nancy Schieffer of Crofton and Peggy Schieffer of Yankton; 14 nieces and nephews: Lisa Albers, Tim Schieffer, Erin Donaldson; RoseAnne Kath, Alan, Diane, Carl, and Jon Schieffer; Paul and Nick Schieffer, Sara Livingston and Jan Constantaras; Marvin Olnes III and Mary Holscher.

Larry was preceded in death by his father and mother: Norbert and Mary Schieffer and their parents, Francis and Katherine (Guenther) Schieffer and Joseph and Edith (Merkel) Mueller; two brothers: Val Dean and Marlan Schieffer.
