Aldine V. Mayer, age 98, of Gayville, South Dakota died on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Gayville Lutheran Church in Gayville, South Dakota with Reverend David Bentz officiating. Burial will be in the Gayville Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, on Thursday, May 21 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota. Visitation also continues one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Pallbearers are Mark Droppers, Jodi Rae Fimbinger, Chris Leech, Russ Mayer, Dan Orton, and Jay Van Der Werff.

Aldine was born May 9, 1928 to John and Martha (Larson) Olson at her grandparents’ home in Gayville, South Dakota. She attended country school at Dewey #6 through the eighth grade and graduated from Gayville High School in 1946. Aldine married Gene Orton on June 2, 1946 and moved to Sidney, NE where Gene was employed at the Sioux Ordnance Depot. Together, they raised two sons, Douglas and Gregory. In 1965, Gene was transferred to White Sands Missile Range at Las Cruces, NM. They lived there for 13 years where Aldine worked as a secretary at New Mexico State University. After Gene retired in 1977, they moved back to Gayville. Aldine worked at the Yankton County Observer and Yankton College until it closed in 1984. She then worked at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion as an administrative secretary until she retired. Gene passed away in April 1982. On October 15, 1988, Aldine married Warren Mayer and they continued to live in Gayville. She was a member of Gayville Lutheran Church, having been baptized, confirmed and married at that church. She also belonged to the W/ELCA and served as treasurer of the church for four years. Aldine was also a member of the Gayville American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, traveling and embroidering.

Aldine is survived by her two sons: Douglas (Cathy) Orton of Yankton, SD and Gregory (Joanna) Orton of Green River, WY; five grandchildren: Kristen, Jeremy, Ryan, Melissa and Jodi Rae; many great grandchildren; three step children and their families: Allen (Mary) Mayer, Laurie LaCroix and Russ (Cherre) Mayer.

Aldine was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; sister, Doreen Larson; two brothers: Sanford and Gaylord Olson; and Lonnie LaCroix.
