July 22, 1966 — June 5, 2026

Yankton

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joel Vermuele, who died on June 5, 2026, from complications following a massive heart attack. Joel was 59 years old.

Born on July 22, 1966 in San Diego, California, Joel lived life with energy, passion, and a sense of adventure that touched everyone who knew him. From an early age, he loved the desert and spent countless hours riding his Honda motorcycle across the rugged landscapes he cherished. He was happiest outdoors, whether exploring the open desert or spending a peaceful day fishing with his beloved Papa, creating memories that remained close to his heart throughout his life.

Joel was a gifted drummer whose talent and dedication to music opened doors to extraordinary experiences. He performed at events featuring renowned bands including Soundgarden, Guns N' Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. One of his proudest accomplishments was winning a drum contest against Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe, a testament to his exceptional skill and passion for his craft.

While Joel's musical accomplishments were impressive, those who knew him best will remember him for something even greater: his wicked sense of humor. He had an unmatched ability to make people laugh, brighten a room, and turn ordinary moments into lasting memories. His quick wit, warm heart, and larger-than-life personality endeared him to family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

When Carol and Joel moved to Yankton, SD, he worked at the Lewis and Clark Theater as manager and through his contacts in the music industry, he brought many stars to the theater for people to enjoy.

He loved his dogs, Sam and Gabby plus his cats, Nigel and Puss.

Joel is survived by his devoted wife, Carol; his mother and stepfather, Virginia Van Sluis and Peter; his father, Ernie Vermuele; and his sister, Sarah Vermuele. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, fellow musicians, and loved ones who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.

Joel's life was filled with music, adventure, laughter, and love. Though he is no longer with us, the rhythm of his spirit lives on in the stories he told, the music he played, and the countless lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

"When words fall short, the music speaks. Joel's music, laughter, and love will echo in our hearts forever." ❤️

A celebration of his life will take place at a later date and arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
