View/Post Sympathy Messages

Bernard L. "Buck" Singer, age 77, of Yankton, South Dakota, died at his home surrounded by his three sons, Ray, Jay and Brad on Saturday, January 23, 2010.

Funeral services are 10:30 AM, Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Bob Lacey officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery with military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Wednesday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a vigil service at 7:30 PM. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the funeral.

Buck was born August 7, 1932 in Stockham, Nebraska to Karl and Ida (Hill) Singer. On January 22, 1952, Buck entered the United States Navy and served during the Korean War. He had a long and distinguished career with the Navy and in Air Force civil service. Buck earned several master degrees and traveled around the world several times in his life. He was a private pilot, a small business owner and was involved in many different business adventures. He was also very active as a community volunteer and organizer. On April 9, 1999, Buck married Phyllis (Heine) Chytka. They were involved in many social activities both here in Yankton and also in Texas. He recently had taken up the guitar and along with Phyllis they played every chance they got for others throughout the area. Even late in life he was still learning and teaching others. Buck loved a good time. He also liked a good deal and always tried to make it better. He collected many things, including tractors, motorcycles and airplanes. But most of all, Buck collected friends.

Buck is survived by four children, four grandchildren, five brothers and sisters, and all whose lives he touched through the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis Singer; and two brothers and sisters.

My thoughts and Prayers are with you, Phyllis, and your family in this time of sorrow. When I was a member of Catholics returning home you both always made me feel comfortable. Buck's incredible faith in God will no doubt lead him to eternal peace in heaven.

Jessica (Heimes) Anderson

Many thoughts and prayers. Buck had many gifts and will be missed. I met Buck and Phyllis when I became involved in the Catholics Returning Home group. They were a wonderful couple, caring for one another, encouraging each other, and truly enjoying one another's company. He and Phyllis together contributed in so many ways to the mission of Catholics Returning Home...hours of service on projects, sharing their personal faith, and so much work on those billboards that stand to this day to remind us it's never too late to come back home.

My deepest sympathies to you all. Buck was an amazing man. I always enjoyed talking to him when he came into the bank. I really got to know Buck & Phyllis in August of 2008 when they began teaching me how to play the guitar. I will never forget his love for Johnny Cash and how proud he was when he played and sang "Folsom Prison Blues." He was a joy to get to know and will be missed dearly.

Our sympathy to you.

Buck, we go back a long way. From Lincoln, NE. in the early 60's and many visits through the years in many different places, from Alaska to the backroads of Arkansas (searching for and hauling an old tractor part) We will miss you my friend.

Joe & Jo Breault

I became acquainted with Buck in 1980 and not long after he became my boss. That combined with the gun shows, motorcycle buying trips and other work and social activity, I spent a lot of enjoyable time with Buck, he was one of a kind and he will be missed. Chuck Doering

As we reflect upon our friendship with Buck Singer, we admired his vast knowledge on so many topics and the way he lived life to the fullest. We will miss his stories and musical entertainment.

I met Buck when I went to work in the 3908th Contracting Office at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska in 1986. Buck always had a story to tell and was quick with a laugh. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and many friends.
