Herman George Schwarz was born July 2, 1922 in Yankton County to Paul and Minnie (Lau) Schwarz. He received his education in Yankton County where he met the first love of his life, Mary Cwach. On December 28, 1944, Mary and Herman were joined in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton. Shortly after, Herman went and protected our nation by enlisting to serve in the Korean War as a Medic Transporter with the Fifth grade of the 382 General Hospital. He wrote home to his wife and family frequently and was honorably discharged on February 4, 1947. After returning home, Herman and Mary moved to the family farm where he pursued his passion of farming. On August 5, 1948, they were blessed with their first daughter, Jeanette Renae, and then in 1965, they adopted 2 children, Lance and Debra.
Herman enjoyed tinkering on machines, cars, or anything with an engine. He also took pleasure in being a bus driver for many years with the Yankton School District, and having the opportunity to get to know the kids. Herman was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Farmers Union, Antique Auto Association and the Yankton VFW Post No. 791. On November 27, 1998 he married Lorine Culp (Schoenfelder) in Yankton at St. John's Lutheran Church. Not only did he gain a loving wife, but someone who never left his side through it all. Herman is known for his love of ice cream with fruit topping (Vanilla was his favorite) and pie (Cherry was his favorite). In his older years, Herman enjoyed being with family, watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren in their activities whether it be football, basketball, skiing, dancing, swimming or simply playing.
Survivors include his wife, Lorine of Yankton, 2 daughters, Jeanette (Paul) Gravdahl of Sisseton SD and Debra (Lynn) McColley of Arizona; 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
