Darrel Conrad, age 81, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Calvary Baptist Church with Reverend Jon Cooke officiating. Burial will be in the Newcastle Cemetery in Newcastle, Nebraska. Visitation is Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service and time of sharing at 7:00 PM. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Pallbearers are Jason Miller, Jason McCarville, Joshua Conrad, Matthew Siebert, Roger Armstrong, Todd Gunnarson, and Brad Gunnarson. Honorary pallbearers are all of Darrel's other grandchildren.

Darrel Conrad was born October, 19, 1930, in Newcastle, Nebraska, to Jack and Clara (Lofgren) Conrad. He grew up on the farm in Newcastle and graduated from high school in 1948. After high school, Darrel enlisted in the United States Army serving his country during the Korean Conflict. He married Beverly Dickey on May 2, 1953, in Newcastle. Darrel farmed in the Newcastle area for 30 years until 1986, when he began working for Archer Petroleum as an area manager until retiring in 2001. After his retirement, he continued working part-time for the State of South Dakota and at Hy-Vee.

Darrel enjoyed old iron farm machinery, Model T's, and singing in the barbershop quartet. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the Yankton Old Iron Association, and past member of Gospel Chapel in Newcastle.

Darrel accepted the Lord as his Savior as a young child and was always driven to have a closer relationship with the Lord.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Yankton; four children: Doug (Kim) Conrad of Newcastle, Nebraska; Eric (Katty) Conrad of Grants Pass, Oregon; Garry (Charlotte) Conrad of Phoenix, Arizona; and Kristine (David) Thomas of Wasilla, Alaska; 18 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; two sisters: Jean Armstrong of Ponca, Nebraska and Andrea Conrad of South Sioux City, Nebraska; brother, Jack Conrad of Lincoln, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Kenneth.
