Georgiana Marie (Johnson) Steinbach, age 88, of Yankton, South Dakota, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Avera Yankton Care Center, her home for the last 9 years.

A private family service will be on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.

Georgiana was born April 27, 1923, in Turlock, California, to Arthur O. and M. Edna (Lange) Johnson. She had one brother, Robert, and a special "sister cousin", Evelyn (Swanson) Ohlen. In 1928, Georgiana's parents returned from California to their native South Dakota and owned a farm on the Box Elder divide, east of Rapid City. Georgiana, her brother, and cousins (who lived on a neighboring farm) shared many good times together, including riding to their one-room school house in a horse drawn wagon.

Georgiana attended Rapid City High School from 1937 to 1941, rooming at various residences in Rapid City with Evelyn, since they could not drive to town daily from the farms. After high school, she attended Business College in Rapid City and worked at a newsstand in the lobby of the Alex Johnson Hotel. She met her future husband, Nathan Robert "Bob" Steinbach, while he was attending the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City. They were married on May 14, 1943, in Flint, Michigan, where Bob was working. Bob later joined the United States Navy and they traveled extensively from New York to San Francisco as he went from officer's indoctrination to deployment in the South Pacific. After the war, they returned to Flint, Michigan where their first child, Susan Marie, was born in 1946. In 1947, they returned to Bob's native Yankton, South Dakota, where they owned and operated Steinbach's Produce from 1949 to 1975. They had two more children, Thomas Robert in 1950 and Sally Ann in 1954. Georgiana kept the books for the business as well as working as the financial secretary for Trinity Lutheran Church, which she continued for 25 years. They were both very active with the church, serving on several committees. After her retirement, they loved to travel, visiting their children. They made several visits to Oregon, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana. In 1984, their only grandchild was born, Matthew Glenn Chalk. Her family was truly blessed by her being in their lives and her beautiful smile will be missed by all.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Bob Steinbach of Yankton; three children: Susan (Ted) Brown of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tom Steinbach of Yankton, and Sally (Gary) Chalk of Rapid City; grandson, Matt Chalk of Rapid City; brother, Bob (Bette) Johnson of Porcupine, South Dakota; brother-in-law, Lloyd Walla of Las Vegas, Nevada; cousin Evelyn Ohlen of Rapid City; two nieces and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Dale Walla and numerous other cousins.

As I read the obit in the P & D this morning, many memories of our times together emerged, notably all the wonderful parties and outings that we had as the ANNIVERSARY GROUP. And the special Valentine dinner we sharedat the care center when Bill was a short time resident there, plus our bridge group as young mothers. Such good memories. I send my most sypathetic thoughts and blessings to you are this time and know, Bob, that these past nine years have been a difficult time in your wondeful life. May Georgiana now rest in Peace.

Love, Inez

I am saddened to hear of Georgiana's passing. Her parents were long time friends of my parents and she and her husband, Bob were dear friends of my brothers and sisters in Yankton

I always thought your mom was the most cheerful person I'd ever met, despite all of the trials Tom and Sally put her through (I didn't know Susan, so I can't comment)! She was always smiling. Flustered, maybe, but still smiling! She seemed faintly scandalized by all the antics but amused at the same time. Both of my girls visited her in the nursing home with their Sacred Heart classes, and she was their favorite, so her sweet nature remained steadfast through the years. Please know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I'm sure that a send-off in her beloved Black Hills will give her spirit peace.

Bob

It was so sad to hear the news. I so fondly remember the times our families shared over the years. I especially enjoyed listening to Mom and Georgiana sharing stories and laughs over the many experiences they had together over the years.

May God Bless
Don Ohlen

Bob, Tom , Susan & Sally: we saw Georgiana's obit in the R.C. Journal, so sorry to see another sweet memory from my childhood pass on. But, I know her life in our realm was compromised. I so remember her sweet spirit and radiant smile..and I know Jesus ushered her into His presence, where she is young ,whole and filled with Joy. I am sure mom and dad were in the crowd to welcome her home

So sorry to hear of this. Ithas been years since we have seen any of the family. We remember many good times as kids out at Aunt Edna and Uncle Art's place. The Johnson reunions are no more I guess. Mom was the last of her generation. She passed away at 101 last April. Was good to have Joe's boys and wives at her 100 birthday party. Memories are wonderful . Our prayers for comfort are with all of you, Tell Bob hello from us.

Bill Johnson

Susan - I was sorry to see about your mother's passing. You and your family are certainly in my thoughts and prayers at this time.

Thinking of Georgianna only brings a smile as my childhood memories of the times our families shared together are wonderful...I can still hear her infectious laughter. I know the last years have been difficult, yet when I visited her only 3 years ago, she seemed so happy and content...her inner beautiful spirit prevailed. I now picture her in Heaven hanging out with Bill and Edith. We were all lucky to have them in our lives!

Much sympathy and love, Sharon Pike Sarvak
