Vera Nelson, age 97 of Coleridge, Nebraska died on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Park View Haven Nursing Home in Coleridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Coleridge with the Rev. Jeffrey Loseke officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery in Coleridge. Visitation will be on Monday, September 26th from 6-8:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Coleridge. Visitation will continue on Tuesday at church one hour prior to services.

Pallbearers will be Greg Meier, Steve Dirks, Gary Graham, Jim Fish, Dan Fiscus, and Larry Paulsen.

Vera Frances Nelson was born on May 10, 1914 in Portsmouth, Iowa to George and Emma (Weihs) Schneider. She grew up in Westphalia, Iowa and attended country school nearby. She graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia. Vera married Clarence Kurtzhals on November 21, 1939 in Westphalia and then moved to Randolph, NE to work for her aunt and uncle, John & Maime Gubbels. She and Clarence farmed Southeast of Coleridge and then in 1948 they lived and farmed north of Coleridge. Clarence died on January 20, 1966. Vera then married Elmer Nelson on December 20, 1973 in Coleridge. Elmer died on May 21, 1992. Vera continued to live in town after Elmer died until moving to Park View Haven Nursing Home on February 12, 2010.

Vera belonged to St. Michael's Catholic Church and its guild. She loved cooking, sewing, dancing, and raising flowers.

Vera is survived by three sons, Wayne Kurtzhals of Coleridge, NE; Jim and wife Kathy Kurtzhals of Phoenix, Arizona; and Terry Kurtzhals of Lincoln, NE; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren; one brother-in-law Joe Leushen of Earling, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence Kurtzhals; husband Elmer Nelson; three sisters Luella Kloewer, Mildred Bruck, Irene Leushen; two brothers Walter and Elmer Schneider.
