Gladys Holbrook, age 90, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
A Memorial Mass will be at 2:30 PM, on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Mark Lichter officiating. Inurnment will be at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
Gladys was born January 17, 1921 in Hurley, South Dakota to Milton and Mary (Kelly) Barnhart. When Gladys was a young girl, the family moved to Yankton and she attended Yankton Public Schools. On July 17, 1940, she married Lloyd Holbrook in Yankton. After their marriage, they moved to California where Lloyd was stationed during World War II. After his discharge, they moved back to Yankton and raised their family. Gladys was a great homemaker. She loved to bake and was an excellent cook. Gladys loved her family and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to go shopping and was always willing to lend a helping hand at her daughters' stores, Gifts and Giggles and Kate's.
Gladys is survived by her three daughters: Judy Cihak of Yankton, Linda (Dean) Shutt of Eagle Grove, Iowa and Laurie (Jim) Rembold of Yankton; eight grandchildren: Scott (Jennifer) Larson, Jake (Tammy) Larson, Katie (Dylan) Lewis, Brady Shutt (Jennifer Saylor), Meg (Lance) Schutjer, Judd (MacKenzie) Shutt, Sarah (Eric) Heine and Josh (Liz) Rembold; and 13 great grandchildren.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd Holbrook on October 2, 1997; infant son, Robert Holbrook; infant granddaughter, Molly Larson; one brother, Bill Kelly; and three sisters, Joy Merrigan, Betty and Beverly Sage.

I knew "Blondie" most of my life and always enjoyed our visits. She was a good friend to my family and I feel a real sadness but I know she is with Lloyd. My thoughts are with the family.
