Gladys Madell Cook was born November 20, 1921, 6˝ miles north of St. Jo, Texas to Henry "Les" and Bessie (Reed) Cook. She graduated from high school and later in life took courses in cooking and running a kitchen and she earned a certificate at South Dakota State University. During World War II from 1943 until the end of the war, she worked in the shipyard in Vancouver, Washington as a riveter. It was there she met Joseph Henry Drury. They were later married on April 2, 1946 and had one daughter. In 1947, they moved to Mitchell, SD and Joe drove gravel truck. Gladys worked in a restaurant as a cook and waitress. They then moved to Pickstown when the Fort Randall Dam was built and Gladys worked in the grocery store as a checker. They were one of the last families to leave when the dam was completed. In 1956, they moved to Colorado Springs, CO where Joe worked as an ironworker on the chapel at the Air Force Academy and Gladys worked at Pepsi Bottling Company and Brach Candy Company. Four years later, they moved to Fort Pierre where Joe worked on the Oahe Dam. Gladys worked at Piggly Wiggly as a checker, White Way Locker, and also with the school lunch program. In 1964, they moved to Bonesteel, SD. Gladys worked at Sportsman Steak House in Dallas, SD and Tee Pee Café in Bonesteel. Joe passed away in 1982 and Gladys moved to Lincoln, NE where she worked at Control Data and the Department for the Deaf as a receptionist.

She worked hard all her life and was well liked and respected. She was an excellent cook and baker except once she was making cherry pie and put green food coloring in the cherries, not red. In 1988, she moved to Yankton after becoming disabled. She was a huge Braves fan and watched every game. She also loved to watch her game shows and play with her grandchildren. She was a great mom, grandma and great grandma. Her life wasn't always easy but she was happy and friendly to everyone. Everyone loved her as she always thought of others and never herself.

She left to mourn her daughter, Dorothy Jo (Roger) Lyngstad of Volin; one sister, Dorothy E. Waggoner of Sanger, TX; four grandchildren: Amy Lyngstad of Utica, Julie Lyngstad of Irene, Molly Haas of Yankton and Tammy (Thad) Larson of Aurora, CO; six great grandchildren: Ashley and Michaela Wagner, Logan and Sophie Haas, and Emma Jo and Caleb Larson; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews in Texas.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Henry Drury; brother, Ray Cook; stillborn daughter, Elizebeth; granddaughter, Penny Lee Lyngstad, who was 6 years old; and step daughter, Darlene Tuten.
