Erna E. Cook, age 95, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Thursday, October 6, 2011, at Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation with the family present is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, October 10, 2011 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are Terry Doering, Fletcher Stark, Calahan Stark, Thad Jensen, Nick Jensen, and Jess Paulsen.

Erna Evelyn Cook was born August 16, 1916 in Irene, South Dakota, to Martin and Nicolette (Jacobsen) Westergaard. She grew up in rural Irene and attended Slowey Country School while working on the farm helping with the chores until her family moved to Oregon. She married Christian Paulsen on November 26, 1940 in Reno, Nevada. They lived in Oregon until moving to Yankton in August of 1948. Erna worked at Stupenagles in Yankton until 1968. She married Clifford Cook in 1967 in Rapid City, South Dakota. They moved out to their farm north of Yankton after their marriage where Erna helped Clifford with the chores. Clifford died in 1980. In 1989 Erna moved back into Yankton.

Erna enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidering, reading, her flowers, and especially spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her happiest times where spent working on the farm.

Survivors include her three children: Mary (Roy) Doering of Yankton; Jens (Linda) Paulsen of Centerville, South Dakota; and Joyce (Randy) Jensen of Crook, South Dakota; 11 grandchildren: Kenneth (Penny) Stimpson, Timothy (Sharon) Hindsman, Donna (Scott) Hendrix, Teresa (Roger) Conn, Terry (Danielle) Doering, Tammy (Jake) Larson, Jess (Melissa) Paulsen, Lars (Bobbi) Paulsen, Tina (John) Hilt, Thad (Tonya) Jensen, and Nick Jensen; 29 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister Maesy Barber of Salem, Oregon; two step children: Delores (Bob) Roach of Missouri and Larry Cook of California; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford; two daughters, Verna Mae Hindsman and Carla Byrd; two sons in infancy, Joe and Christian; two brothers, Arnold and Carl Westergaard; and sister, Carrie Jacobsen.

I am so sorry to hear of your Mother's passing. Doug and I wish we could have gotten away to come to the your Mother's funeral. She was a very special lady. May God Comfort each of you at this time of loss.
