Shirley (Layne) Broz, age 86, of St. Helena, Nebraska, died on Monday, March 18, 2019 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, South Dakota. Memorial services are 10:30 AM, on Friday, March 22, 2019 at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with her son, Ron Broz presiding. Inurnment will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers are her beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great granddaughter. Shirley was born March 8, 1933 in Yankton, South Dakota to Leonard and Minnie (Remington) Layne. She grew up in Yankton and graduated from Yankton High School. Shirley then worked at Gurney Seed and Nursery in Yankton. On January 4, 1957, she married Charles Broz. After their marriage, they lived on a farm near Yankton and Shirley continued working for Gurney’s until they moved to a farm near Scotland, SD in 1965. In 1971, they moved to Centerville, SD and Shirley worked at Fireball Decals. In 1976, they moved to Sioux Falls and Shirley continued working in the decal business. They moved to St. Helena, NE in 1979 and lived along the Missouri River. Shirley loved living there along the river and enjoyed many family gatherings at her home. She worked at Dale Electronics until she retired in 1998. Shirley also enjoyed camping, gardening and canning. She loved being a part of the TOPS group. She loved playing bingo with her sisters, country western music, and her beloved dog, Snickers. Above all, Shirley loved her family and her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great granddaughter had a special place in her heart. Shirley is survived by four children: Michael (Katie) Broz of Virginia Beach, VA, Ron (Dory) Broz of Coon Rapids, MN, Lori Straatmeyer of Tyndall, SD and Steven (Raelene) Broz of St. Helena; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; three sisters: Kay (Hal) Kellogg of Wyoming, Janet (Dennis) Mines of Yankton and Barb (John) Schneider of Yankton; and many nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Broz on December 27, 2009; son, Edward Broz; two brothers, Leonard and Robert Layne; and two sisters, Alice Bush and Betty Sherman.
