Angela Dangel was born August 1, 1934, to John and Sylvia (Andersen) Dangel. She was the third of six children raised on a farm near Freeman, South Dakota. She attended Salem Township #99 country elementary school and Mount Marty High School. She earned an Elementary teaching degree from Mount Marty College.
Angela entered the monastery in 1952 and was invested as a novice on June 29, 1953, receiving the name Anna. She made first profession on June 29, 1954, and final profession on June 29, 1957. S. Anna taught in elementary schools in the Lincoln Diocese, Omaha, Nebraska, Pueblo, Colorado, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After Vatican II, she began parish ministry in Vermillion, Wakonda, Centerville, and Yankton, South Dakota. She found bible study, faith formation, and her ministry to the homebound especially fulfilling during this time of her life.
When she returned to the monastery, she cherished her time in the monastery archives, and she used her artistic ability decorating for celebrations in the monastery dining room. She cared for the display cases in the monastery and changed them seasonally. She also spent time helping with Busy Persons Retreats at various colleges in the area, including Mount Marty. In addition, she helped with Confirmation retreats in parishes sponsored by Sacred Heart Monastery.
S. Anna had a profound love for scripture, which served her well in forming her deep faith. She appreciated music, art, and poetry, and these added joy to her life. She was devoted to her family and found that time with family to be life-giving. She walked daily and let the beauty of nature nourish her soul. She found that God dwells in all things and she trusted in God’s mercy, love, and surprises.
S. Anna is survived by her Benedictine sisters, her sisters Rose Hauger, Mary Slowey, and Monica Falter, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Bernadette, and her brother Leo Dangel.
