Richard Joseph “Dick”  Hochstein age 77 of Hartington, Nebraska died on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota. Due to the present universal healthcare precautions a private Mass of Christian Burial will be at Holy Family (Sts. Peter & Paul) Catholic Church in Bow Valley with the Rev. Jim Keiter officiating.  A public memorial mass and burial at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery will be at a future date along with a funeral luncheon. Notice will follow at the appropriate time.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home of Hartington. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Becker, LaVerle Heimes, LaVerle Hochstein, Dale Sudbeck, Joe Zimmerman, and Chris Kathol. Richard Joseph was born on November 16, 1942 in Hartington to Paul Augustine and Evelyn Teresa (Arens) Hochstein. He lived in Cedar County his entire life and worked as a painter and carpenter for over 35 years. Richard also farmed from 1968 to 1982 on the family farm near Bow Valley. He also worked for Gurney’s Seed and Nursery and Alumax in Yankton, SD. Richard was a member of Holy Family Church in Bow Valley, was in the National Guard for six years in Yankton, involved in 4-H for nine years and worked for the Bow Valley Park Association for 10 years.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing and playing cards. Richard is survived by four brothers Alvin (Heidi) Hochstein of Cedar Park, TX, Ron (Diane) Hochstein of Hartington, Dallas (Dorothy) Hochstein of Hartington, Bob (Jeanine) Hochstein of Yankton, SD; two sisters Mary Jean (Alvin) Lammers of Fordyce, NE, Dianne (Clinton) Becker of Fordyce, NE; sister-in-law Linda Hochstein of St. Helena, NE; many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Evelyn Hochstein; an infant brother Clare Hochstein and brother Joe Hochstein.
