Melvin Misar was born November 4, 1937, in rural Scotland, South Dakota, to Steve and Josephine (Bartunek) Misar.  He attended country school and participated in 4-H as a child.  He married Mary Blume on August 30, 1985, in Armour, South Dakota, and raised their three children on the family farm.  Melvin farmed his entire life with his parents, brother, and sons.

Melvin was a hardworking, honest man who could fix anything.  He raised cattle and chickens, and grew several types of crops.  He took pride in keeping a tidy farm with well-maintained buildings.  Throughout his life, he enjoyed reading, dancing, playing cards, listening to the radio, bowling, doing carpentry work, and attending area fairs and festivals with his family.  He loved his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren.  He made sure pastries or donuts were on hand at all times.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Misar of Scotland, South Dakota, three children: Kathryn Henning of Rapid City, South Dakota; Chris Misar of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Mark (Elisa) Misar of Scotland; four grandchildren: Izaac, Emmett, Lyla and Colton; sister, Evelyn Misar of Freeman, South Dakota; brother, Elmer Misar of Yankton, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Patricia (John Mabie) Blume of Livingston, Montana; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Josephine (Orville) Hauck and sister-in-law, Audrey Misar.
