Marvin "Marv" Lockwood

Marvin “Marv” Lockwood, a devoted family man, avid outdoorsman, and lifelong sports enthusiast, passed away on July 25, 2026, following a tragic fall during a hike on the trails behind his lake home, accompanied by his faithful dog, Reggie. He was 72 years old.

A memorial gathering will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Burial will be at a later date in Yankton Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers are his beloved grandchildren: Jonah Morgan, Jada Morgan, and Charlize Lockwood.

Marvin “Marv” Lockwood was born on March 18, 1954, in San Diego, California, to Donald and Cleo (Starr) Lockwood. Following his father's military service, the family, including Marvin and his identical twin brother, Mike, returned to Brookings, South Dakota, where Marvin grew up deeply connected to the land and his Midwestern roots. Marvin pursued his higher education at South Dakota State University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Wildlife Management.

A tireless worker even during his college years, he managed the local McDonald's. During his time at SDSU, he married Susan Lyons in 1974, and the couple welcomed two children, Justin and Jessica. After completing his degree, Marvin moved to Yankton, South Dakota, where he dedicated many years to farming before later working at Yaggies Feed Mill. He subsequently built a 25 year career with Walmart.

In 1991, Marvin married Laurie Hieb, embarking on a wonderful new chapter of life together. Throughout their lives together, Marvin and Laurie also shared their home and hearts with many four-legged kids that he absolutely adored.

Beyond his career, Marvin poured his energy into his community and youth development. He was deeply active in youth sports, coaching numerous championship Little League baseball and girls softball teams. He and Laurie also generously gave their time as mentors through the Big Friend, Little Friend program, leaving a lasting, positive impact on many young lives. A natural storyteller with a vibrant, welcoming spirit, Marvin never met a stranger and loved nothing more than recounting his latest adventures and experiences with everyone he met.

Following his retirement, Marvin and Laurie realized a dream by moving to a lake home near Lewis and Clark Lake. True to his spirited nature, retirement did not slow him down. Marvin was a passionate sports fan who cheered fiercely for the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings, alongside his steadfast support for the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits.

At the lake, he was entirely in his element, spending countless hours hiking the horse trails and riding his bicycle all around the shoreline.

He is survived by his loving wife, Laurie Lockwood; his children, Justin (Michelle) Lockwood and Jessica Morgan; his cherished grandchildren, Charlize (Harley) Lockwood, Jonah (Brianna) Morgan, and Jada Morgan; his siblings, Mike (Debbie) Lockwood, Kathy (Brian) Peterson, and Pat (Becky) Lockwood; and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, Don and Cleo Lockwood.

He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication to family, a deep appreciation for the outdoors, and a lifetime of wonderful memories that will be treasured by all who knew him.
