Marie Syring, age 87, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Friday, January 19, 2024, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton, South Dakota, with Reverend Joe Forcelle officiating. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery in Scotland, South Dakota. Visitation is from 5:30 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota, with a Divine Mercy Chaplet and Vigil Service at 7:00 PM.
Marie was born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD to Charles and Marie (Kozak) Novak on November 16, 1936. She graduated from Peterka School #46 and then went to High School. Marie graduated from Yankton High School in 1954.
Then, she went to Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD and also to Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD. Marie received a teacher’s diploma from Mount Marty College and taught school for several years.
Marie was married to Richard Syring on November 25, 1959. After he served in the Army, they farmed and Marie stayed home with their four children. As the children grew up and went on their own, Marie worked as a CNA and RA at Sister James Nursing Home for many years.
Marie was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Yankton, SD. She belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America (CDA), did Adoration to the Blessed Sacrament, did Homebound Eucharistic Ministry, taught CCD for many years and belonged to the Legion of Mary. Marie’s prayer: “Thank you dear Lord for making me a child of your Holy Catholic Church. I love you! Jesus, Mary, Joseph be with me always.”
Marie is survived by her husband, Richard (64 years); her four children: Nancy Syring, Mary (Jeff) Hochstein, Gerald (Diane) Syring, and Anne (Aaron) Jensen; my nine grandchildren: Hannah (Torrey) Callies, Will (Kayla) Johnson, Chris (Laura) Hochstein, Sara (Brad) Bies, Brian (Rachel) Hochstein; Vanessa (Drew) Danforth, Justin (Megan) Syring, Ethan (Jennalee) Jensen and Emma Jensen; 9 great-grandchildren: Ava, Bryson, Trenner, Treyson, Brielle, Adelaide, Charlie, Winter and Baby Boy due in February; Her brother Laddie (Mary) Novak; and many nieces and nephews.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marie Novak; one sister, Helen Kokes; and two brothers: Alois and Charles Novak.
