Larry R. Obr, age 87, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Monday, March 23, 2026, at his home in Yankton.

A memorial service will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton, South Dakota, with Reverend Jeff Otterman officiating. A light lunch to follow the service. Burial will be in Country Presbyterian Cemetery in Tabor, South Dakota, with military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 of Yankton, South Dakota. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton, South Dakota.

Larry R. Obr was born September 29, 1938, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Frank and Mary (Pluta) Obr. He grew up in Yankton and graduated from Yankton High School where he lettered in both football and basketball. At age 17 he enlisted into the United States Navy and was stationed at Moffett Field, California where he worked as an aircraft mechanic. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Yankton where he worked as a bartender for a few years until he became a union bricklayer. He married Grace Kuchta on February 6, 1965, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton. After their marriage, Larry continued working as a bricklayer in the Yankton area and then moved to Waco, Texas. While in Waco, Larry started S & O Masonry, which he operated for several years.

Larry was never afraid to try new things and after retiring from bricklaying, he started Texas Fan & Flame, bought equipment to uproot and plant trees, raised cattle and then worked for Lawns Limited landscaping (12 years), taking care of the flowers in downtown Waco until he retired at age 75. They moved back to Yankton in 2019.

Larry enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and Baylor Women’s Basketball. He also enjoyed fishing, smoking briskets, attending class reunions in Yankton, having coffee with his friends at the Rocket Burger, going on 18 cruises and playing cards with friends in his final years. He loved his family above all else and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Obr of Yankton; two sons: John (Bridgette) Obr of Temple, Texas and Dean (Tandy) Obr of Edmond, Oklahoma; two daughters: Jennifer (Jeff) Erickson of Mesquite, Nevada and Shanna Rogers of Murietta, California; 10 grandchildren: Courteney, Cameron (Angela), Blake, Bryson, Kayla, Brittany, Zachary, Connor, Nicole and Zachary; five great grandchildren: Camden, Lucy, Callen, Riley and Emma. Also sister-in-law, Marillyn Obr, sister-in-law, Rita Meirose, brother-in-law, Elmer (Doris) Kuchta and brother-in-law Gerald (Mary) Kuchta.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Frank and Mary Obr and brother, DuWayne Obr.
