June L. Mittan, age 101 of Hartington, Nebraska died on Friday, May 16, 2025 at the Arbor Care Center in Hartington.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington with Denny Kinkaid officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be at the Hartington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
June LaRene Mittan was born Nov 2, 1923, in Cedar County, NE to Clarence and Fern (Parsons) Dowling. She attended Breezy Hill School, Dist 106 through the eighth grade and graduated from Hartington High School in 1940. She attended one year at Wayne State Teachers college and taught rural school for several years. On Dec 25, 1946, she and Gaylon Mittan were married at the First Congregational Church in Hartington. They farmed in the Center School area until 1990 when they retired and moved to Hartington.
When on the farm, June had been a member of the Help Your Neighbor Club and the Chat and Sew Club. In Hartington, she was an active member of the Congregational Church, a member of the Women’s Fellowship, served on the Distress Committee for many years and was the Church Historian for 19 years. She was a member of the Senior Center and volunteered at the Center for a number of years.
June was fond of making quilts, using scraps to make something useful. She loved gardening and flowers and was an active letter writer, especially keeping touch with the four grandchildren. June started doing genealogy research in 1976. Many summer trips found Gaylon and June wandering through old cemeteries in faraway states and visiting Historical Museums to gather information that she compiled into numerous notebooks tracing the families of her and Gaylon’s ancestors.
She is survived by two daughters and two sons: Carol Doeden of Blair, NE; Marcia (Bruce) Newton of Omaha, NE; Allen (Jennie) Mittan of Omaha, NE; and Bob Mittan of Tucson, AZ, Four grandchildren Eric (Brie) Mittan of New York, NY; Kaitlyn Mittan of Raleigh, NC; Brian (Val) Newton of Omaha, NE; Kyle Mittan of Tucson, AZ; three step-grandchildren: Bill Doeden of Omaha, NE, Mike Doeden of Denver, NC, and Patricia Angle of Tucson, AZ, four great grandchildren: Gavin, Liam, and Ada June Newton, and Astoria June (A.J.) Mittan; and five step-great grandchildren: Mike, Aaron, Sarah, Jacob and Joshua Doeden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylon in 2018, parents in 1967, a brother Ronald in 1938, two sisters Marjorie Konken in 1985 and Barbara Kinkaid in 2006, a son-in-law Gil Doeden in 2024 and an infant granddaughter.
