Janice E. Steffen

Janice E. Steffen, age 84 of Constance, Nebraska died on Saturday, July 4, 2026 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday July 9, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Constance, Nebraska with the Rev. Eliot Schwer officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Constance. Visitation with family will be one hour prior to services at church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton.

Janice Elizabeth was born on April 26, 1942 in Yankton, SD to Chester and Gertrude (Noecker) Boardman. She grew up in Crofton and married James Francis Steffen on May 3, 1960 in Crofton, NE. To this union seven children were born, James Jr., Michelle, Todd, Joe, Jackie, Kerry, and Bengie. Janice worked for over 20 years at Gurney Seed and Nursery in Yankton, SD. She also worked for the Corps of Engineers.

Janice was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Constance. She was a great cook and liked fishing, gardening, her flowers and especially spending time with her grandkids.

Janice is survived by her husband, James of Constance; six children and spouses James Jr. “Hardy” (Eileen) Steffen of Springfield, SD, Michelle Krotzinger of Yankton, SD, Todd (Barb) Steffen of Crofton, Joe (Rhonda) Steffen of Yankton, SD, Kerry (Jody) Steffen of Fordyce, Bengie (Darby) Steffen of Fordyce; 11 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a sister Darlene Henderson of Belton, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents Chester and Gertrude Boardman; daughter Jackie Steffen; sisters Elaine (Mike) Higgins, Melva Morrissey, Bonnie (Daniel) Neuhalfen, Alice (Don) Dirks; brothers Dean Boardman, Loy Boardman, and Frank Boardman.
