James "Jim" Beecher

James “Jim” Beecher, age 76, of Yankton, South Dakota, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. Military honors will be performed by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 and the SD Army National Guard Funeral Honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home.

James Allen Beecher was born September 6, 1949 in Scotland, South Dakota to Allen and Pearl (Gibbon) Beecher. He grew up on a farm west of Scotland and attended country school at Cass Elementary. Jim graduated from Scotland High School in 1967. He worked for Yankton Concrete building silos for a few years and then joined the United States Army. He served during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Thailand. There, he met his future wife. After his discharge, Jim returned to Yankton for a few years but then went back to Thailand and married Kiew “Att” on February 18, 1981. In July of 1981, they moved back and made their home in Yankton. Jim worked as a machinist for The Freeman Company until he retired in 2016. Jim also delivered the Yankton Press and Dakotan for many years. They spent their retirement years in Thailand but after Att passed away on January 18, 2018, Jim would split his time living in both places.

Jim found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved reading, taking walks, riding his bike, and making his daily trip to Casey’s for a cup of coffee. He lived a simple, content life and never felt the need for much. He didn’t even own a television, choosing instead to spend his time enjoying a good book, the outdoors, and the quiet moments that brought him peace.

Above all else, Jim loved his wife with all his heart and treasured every opportunity to be there for his nieces and nephews. Though quiet and reserved, he had a gentle spirit and a kind heart that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. His love, warmth, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Jim is survived by six brothers and sisters: Carol (Don) Matthaei of Spencer, SD, Janice (Mike) Barendt of Morris, IL, Raymond (Kathy) Beecher of Scotland, SD, Shirley (Ken) Seely of Mandan, ND, Beverly Beecher of Lawrenceburg, IN and Joy (Verlyn) Vanorny of Lesterville, SD; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and his extended family in Thailand.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
