Irene Nielsen

Irene Nielsen, age 81, of Yankton, South Dakota, passed away peacefully Monday, July 6, 2026, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, South Dakota.

Irene’s wishes were not to have a formal memorial service. A private graveside service will be held at the Yankton Cemetery in Yankton. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton.

Irene Nielsen was born July 12, 1944 in Yankton, South Dakota, to Andrew and Berdetta (Huber) Nielsen. She graduated from Scotland High School in 1962. From 1963 to 2011 she was employed at: Freeman Company, Montgomery Ward, Spurgeons Department Store, White Drug and M-Tron.

She is survived by her sister Kathy (Dave) Schanche; three nieces: Diana (Don), Dawn (Pat), and her Godchild, Kim (Chris); three nephews: David, Dale (Chantel), and Bryan (Elysia); two great nieces: Aeslie (Kory) and Mackenzie; four great great nephews and one great great niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert and his wife Patricia and both sets of grandparents.
