Elaine Bynum, age 87, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids, South Dakota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton, South Dakota, with Reverend Thi Pham officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, September 1, 2025, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a vigil service and rosary at 7:00 PM.

Elaine Bynum was born July 7, 1938, in Hartington, Nebraska, to William and Georgia (Carlson) Wiedenfeld. She grew up on the farm in the Hartington area and attended school in Hartington, graduating from Holy Trinity High School in Hartington. She moved to Yankton, South Dakota and started working for Cargill Seed for a few years until taking a job as a secretary for the Yankton County Highway Department. She worked for the highway department for over 35 years in Yankton. She married Jefferson Bynum on January 17, 1970 in Vermillion, South Dakota.
Elaine was a happy, faithful and devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed camping, gardening, tending to her flowers, taking care of her dogs and cats, and taking family vacations to see relatives. She especially loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include her four children: Sheila (Steve) Lambert, Eric (Jennifer) Bynum, Peggy (Richard) Dana and Jason (Heather Tolsma) Bynum; seven grandchildren: Kyle, Amy, Stephanie, Dalton, Trevor, Brady and Rory; six great grandchildren: Tyler, Jessi, Nova, Kira, Anthony and Sophia; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jeff on August 26, 2011; grandson, Todd and brother, Bob Wiedenfeld.
