Doris Elaine Nelson age 90 of Laurel, Nebraska died on Monday, June 24, 2024 at the Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska surrounded by her family.

Funeral Services will be on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church in Concord with Pastor Deb Hammer officiating. Burial will be at the Concord Cemetery, in Concord NE. Visitation will be on Friday, at the church, from 5-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Laurel.

Pallbearers will be Ray Wordekemper, Chris Wordekemper, Tim Wordekemper, Nick Diediker, John Diediker, Eric Nelson, Philip Nelson, Travis Nelson, Brock Bowlin, and Cole Harmon.

Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters Candy Staub, Kayla Rief, and Mandy Whelchel.

 Doris Elaine was born on October 15, 1933 in Concord to Arthur Carl and Evelina (Magnuson) Johnson. She grew up in Concord and graduated from Concord High School in 1951. Doris attended the Wayne Normal College to receive a Teaching degree. She taught in the area country schools for several years along with selling Avon cosmetics and providing daycare services. Doris married James Harlan Nelson on January 8, 1956 in Concord, NE. Jim proposed to Doris while in the Army by mailing his engagement ring to her.

 Doris was baptized, confirmed and married in the Concordia Lutheran Church. She raised a big garden and was a great cook. Her family and grandchildren will always remember her delicious sweet rolls that she frequently baked. Doris enjoyed her family and the grandchildren’s activities, her flowers and being outdoors. Her faith was always important to her and she said devotions every morning. She was referred to as the “Prayer Warrior” by her family. Doris always had a wonderful trait of putting others first and herself last.

 Doris is survived by her five children Mary (James) Wordekemper of Norfolk, Dan “Harvey” Nelson of Allen, Jodene “Jo” (Kevin) Diediker of Dakota City, NE, Todd Nelson of Laurel, LaRae “Buffy” (Tom) Harmon of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one brother Delwyn (Fern) Johnson of Oklahoma City, OK; sisters-in-law Linda Johnson of Broken Arrow, OK, Mary Johnson of Allen, Donna Stalling of Norfolk, Sharon (Fred) Herrmann of West Point; brother-in-law Dean (Sue) Nelson of Green Valley, AZ.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jim on 11/28/2023; daughter-in-law Roxie Nelson; brothers Evert (Ardyce) Johnson, “Freck” (Suzie) Johnson, Leon Johnson, Duke Johnson; a sister Phyllis (Dean) Salmon; brother-in-law Cliff Stalling; sister-in-law Joyce & (LaVerne) Clarkson
