Dolores "Dory" Ahern

Dolores “Dory” Ahern, age 93, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospice in Yankton. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Larry Regynski officiating.  Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yankton.  Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, July 22, 2019, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a rosary at 6:45 PM followed by a vigil service at 7:00 PM. Dolores “Dory” Ahern was born June 27, 1926, in Volin, South Dakota, to James and Alice (Aune) Sylliaasen. She grew up in the Yankton area and graduated from Yankton High School. She married Wayne Schulte on May 24, 1951 in Yankton. After their marriage they moved to Brookings, South Dakota while, Wayne taught at South Dakota State University. After Wayne died in 1965, Dory moved to Yankton, South Dakota and began working at First Dakota National Bank in Yankton. She married Russ Ahern on September 10, 1966. Dory then finished her banking career at First National Bank of South Dakota until her retirement in the late 1990’s. Dory was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a very active member of The Center in Yankton. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed spending time at The Center playing darts, pool and cards. She loved visiting with people, working in her garden, flowers, baking and her dogs. She was a hardworking, independent woman who took special interest in keeping in touch with everyone. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include her granddaughter, Marissa Wirth of West Fargo, North Dakota; three great grandchildren, Charisma, Camden and Logan; three step-children: Pat (Randy) Koster of Mesa, Arizona; Mary (Ron) Gerk of Lakeville, Minnesota; and Jim Ahern of Phoenix, Arizona; six step-grandchildren: Jim (Jennifer) Koster of Phoenix, Arizona; Alison (Brandon) Haight of Elberfeld, Indiana; Kelly (Ryan) Shellen of Denver, Colorado; Libby Gerk of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Cristin Gerk of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Charlie (Danielle) Gerk of Lakeville, Minnesota; 8 step-great grandchildren: Kate, William and Lily Koster; Sophie and Caden Shellen and Adison, Abram and Emalyn Haight. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands: Wayne Schulte and Russ Ahern; daughter, Debra Schulte and brother, Warren Sylliaasen.
