Diane K. Schramm was born September 28, 1948, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Lester and Darlene (Welch) Michael.  She grew up on a farm east of Utica, South Dakota and was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton, South Dakota.  She attended Fishbeck School K-8th grade and graduated from Yankton High School in 1966.  She worked for Utica Lumber and Grain as a bookkeeper for several years.  She married Rodney Schramm on January 13, 1968, in Yankton, South Dakota.  They lived on their farm near Utica, where they raised their seven children.  Diane worked part-time as a relief carrier for the United States Postal Service for ten years and then as a full-time rural mail carrier until her retirement in 2010.
