Dennis Dean Engstedt, age 90 of Crofton, Nebraska died on Sunday, June 28, 2026 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton with Cheri Leader officiating. Burial will be at the Crofton City Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to services at the Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton.
Dennis was born on July 19, 1935, in Wausa, Nebraska, to Alfred E. and Loretta M. (Swatzke) Engstedt. As a young boy, he lived in Omaha for a short time before moving to Crofton, where he graduated from Crofton High School. He attended Nebraska State Teachers College in Wayne and earned a bachelor's degree in Industrial Arts in 1957. Dennis proudly served his country in the United States Army from January 22, 1958, to January 5, 1960, as a paratrooper. On October 28, 1962, he married Roberta Leslie Hillman, in Crofton.
Following his military service, Dennis worked as a game warden officer before earning his teaching certificate in 1974. He and Roberta made their home in Wakefield, Nebraska, where Dennis taught school for many years. He instructed students in Industrial Arts, construction, and a variety of hands-on building trades. After retiring in 1992, Dennis and Roberta returned to Crofton. Dennis was a member of the American Legion and was happiest when staying active and working with his hands. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and especially looked forward to trips to Sturgis and the Black Hills of South Dakota. A classic car enthusiast, he attended numerous car shows with his prized 1966 Ford Mustang convertible.
Never one to sit idle, Dennis spent his spare time doing upholstery work, construction projects, drywalling, and house painting. He also enjoyed building and flying remote-controlled airplanes and was a member of the Yankton Flight Club. An avid dog lover, he cherished all of his dogs and was a member of the Sioux Valley Kennel Club.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his two daughters, Cheryl (Scott) Roesler of Omaha, Nebraska, and Elizabeth Engstedt of Keller, Texas; five grandchildren, Brandon (Cara) Roesler, Kayla (Austin) Neill, Tyler (Rebecca) Anway, Amanda (Hayden) Kinnard, and Haylie Schultz; six great-grandchildren, Eloise, Emerson, Everett, Carter, Emma, and Waylon; and his sister, Judy (George) Davis of Omaha.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Loretta Engstedt, and his beloved wife, Roberta.
