Dr. David C. Krohn, M.D. age 84, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Avera Majestic Bluffs Hospice House in Yankton.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Yankton, South Dakota (2009 Jackson St), with Reverend Jacob Bobby officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery north of Columbus, Nebraska (32392 122nd Ave). Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, May 30, 2025, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or given to the family to be donated to his nephew, David Fenton’s mission, YWAM, Youth With A Mission.
Pallbearers will be Peter Krohn, Isaac Krohn, Henrik Nagel, Andrew Krohn, Steve Rokahr, and Jim Kinsley.
David C. Krohn was born October 22, 1940, in Fremont, Nebraska, to Arthur and Wilma (Scheer) Krohn. He grew up in Hooper, Nebraska and graduated from Hooper High School in 1957. He then attended Midland College and married Janice “Janie” Luckey in 1962. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1965 with a Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy and then went on to Oregon State and received his Master’s in Fisheries Biology. He taught school in Bruning Nebraska but was always interested in medicine. He enrolled in medical school and graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha in 1973 and then became board certified in 1978. He practiced Family Medicine in Seward, Hastings and Fremont, Nebraska until 1992, when they moved to Yankton, South Dakota. He practiced medicine at the Yankton Medical Clinic from 1992 until retiring in 2009.
While at Seward, David was elected to the Board of Control for Concordia College, where he served for several years. David was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Yankton, sang in the choir, served as an elder and also volunteered in prison ministry. He was a compassionate, caring, hardworking physician and had a thoughtful approach to everyone and every situation. He loved hunting, camping, snow skiing, playing cards and traveling all over the world. Above everything he loved the Lord, his family and fishing. He reflected the love of Jesus by generously sharing his home, his life and time with others.
Survivors include his wife, Janice of Yankton; three sons: Douglas (Kimberly Thompson) Krohn of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Jeffrey (Jessica DeKruyf) Krohn of Sioux City, Iowa; and Zach (Rachel Woolsey) Krohn of Kansas City, Missouri; ten grandchildren: Peter, Sarah, Colette, Lauren, Olivia, Elyn, Henrick, Ava, Isaac, And Andrew; two great grandchildren: Saylor and Holland; sister, JoAnn Rathjen of Rosedale, California; in-laws: Carolyn (Grant) Casper, Gerald (Bonnie) Luckey, Lois (Bob) Kelly, Bill (Nancy) Luckey, and David (Brenda) Luckey, as well as many nieces and nephews; “adoptive family”: Justice Evans and her children Imani and Ariah.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Natalie (Forch) Krohn and brother-in-law, Gerald Rathjen.
