Darrell was born on August 14, 1959, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Orville and Betty (Bangert) Kirchner. He spent his entire life in Yankton, surrounded by family, faith, and music. A Yankton High School graduate of 1977, he played trumpet in the marching band and was selected to the All-State Choir. After graduation, he enlisted in the South Dakota Army National Guard and served honorably with Charlie Battery for 20 years. In 1983, he married Meredith A. Myler, and together they raised three amazing children who were the center of his world.
Darrell believed in working hard and giving his best in everything he did. He spent 27 years at Wilson Trailer and another 17 at Astec before retiring in 2024. When he wasn’t working, he was often found on the sidelines of a soccer field hollering, doing woodworking, or tapping his foot (loudly) to the rhythm of the church bell choir. He loved playing softball and volleyball with his friends, cheering on his children and grandchildren at every opportunity, and making music wherever he went. Known for his quick wit, good humor, and kind spirit, Darrell had a gift for connecting with people. He could visit with anyone about anything and was famously known for always having a mint or LifeSaver in his pocket, ready for whoever he spoke to next. His warmth, laughter, and easygoing nature made everyone feel welcome.
Darrell’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his children, Jennifer (Jake) Reeves of Yankton and Nick (Megan) Kirchner of Warrensburg, MO; five beloved grandchildren: Elijah, Zander, Nora, Bronx, and Jude; his mother, Betty Kirchner of Yankton; and siblings: Kathy (Mike) Larson of Homedale, ID; Karen (Willie) Williams of Citrus Springs, FL; Steve (Julie R.) Kirchner of Yankton; Les (Julie A.) Kirchner of Yankton; Terry (Dawn) Kirchner of Yankton; Kevin Kirchner of Yankton; and Randy (Susan) Kirchner of Yankton; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Orville; his daughter, Desirae Kirchner; and his niece, Hannah Kirchner.
