Clarence William Hauger, a man of steadfast work ethic and quiet devotion to his family, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota. He was 90 years old.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Thi Pham officiating. Burial will be at St. Columba Cemetery in rural Mayfield, South Dakota. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, on Friday, February 20 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a rosary and vigil service at 7:00 PM.
Clarence was born on September 3, 1935 at home on a farm near Irene, South Dakota to William and Ann (Christensen) Hauger. Clarence grew up with the grit and resilience of the era. He graduated from Irene High School in 1956 and worked on the family farm before working on the construction of the Gavins Point Dam. After a time with the Freeman Company, he found his home at Cimpl Packing, where he provided 41 years of dedicated service until his retirement.
Outside of his career, Clarence was content with the simple joys of life. He was a man who took immense pride in his surroundings, often found working tirelessly on his yard to ensure it was kept in pristine condition. He enjoyed the camaraderie and challenge of a day on the golf course, but his greatest joy was always his family. He especially cherished his role as a grandfather, watching the next generations grow. Clarence appreciated the quiet comforts of home—none more so than a good glass of wine enjoyed before sitting down to a home-cooked meal surrounded by those he loved.
On October 15, 1956, Clarence married Rose Ann Dangel. Together, they built a life centered on faith, stability, and raising their five children. Clarence was a man of few words but deep character, showing his love through his unwavering presence.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Rose Hauger of Yankton; his five children: Cindy Hauger of Dakota Dunes, SD; Deb Hauger of Yankton; Mike Hauger (Jo Anne Novacek) of Omaha, NE; Shelly Brill of Atlanta, GA, and Jon Hauger (Cheryl Shear) of Dakota Dunes; his legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Arica (Phillip) Doyle, Allison Hauger, Lauren (Seth) Embry, Taylor Hauger, Benjamin Hauger, and Jacob Hauger; and his great-grandchild, Charlotte Doyle.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ann Hauger; his sisters, Darlene Hirschman and Dorothy Pasco; and his brother, Tom Hauger.
