Carole Nordby age 88 of Hartington, Nebraska died on Friday, July 5, 2024 at Faith Regional Hospital in Norfolk after a brief illness.

Her Memorial service will be on Monday, July 22, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington with the Rev. Amanda Talley officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be at the Hartington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.

Carole Marlene Nordby was born September 27, 1935, to Ernest and Bernice (Hubbard) Janssen at Coleridge, Nebraska. When her mother died in 1937. She and her sister Dolores went to live with George and Marie (Janssen) Bohlken in Coleridge NE., until her father married Kathryn Markesen, in 1941. She attended rural Midway school and graduated from Coleridge High School in 1952. On April 26, 1953, she married Dean E. Nordby, at Trinity Lutheran church in Hartington. They farmed east of Hartington and moved into town in 1965. Her husband Dean died August 7, 2000. 

 She was a Federal Service employee for 27 years, having worked for Selective Service and then the Department of Agriculture with Farmers Home Administration. She retired in October 1994.

 Carole was a member of Trinity Lutheran church at Hartington. She had been with Trinity Lutheran church since the age of 5 when her Father married Kathryn Markesen. She was a past President and Secretary of the women of the ELCA, a member of women’s Bible Study, and past member of the Church Council. She was a volunteer and former officer on the Board of the Hartington Senior Center. Carole also served on the Advisory Council of the Northeast Nebraska Area Agency on Aging for Cedar County. She was a charter member of the Sons of Norway, Lillehammer Lodge at Yankton, South Dakota, and also a former member of the Nordic Dancers. She was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was a member of the Friends of the Library, Hartington; a member of the Cedar County Community Caretakers, and a volunteer at the local Food Pantry. She was a member and past officer on the Board of the Cedar County Historical society. 

 Survivors include one son Doug, of Tallahassee, Florida; one daughter Patti and son-in-law Cleton Bretschneider of Norfolk, NE, Son-in-law Kelly Naslund of Coleridge, former daughter-in-law Linda (Swanson) Nordby, Tallahassee, Florida, five grandsons, four granddaughters, 20 great-grandchildren and four step grandchildren. Three sisters, Doroles Meier, of Coleridge NE., Deanna Anderson of Mountain Lake, MN, Debra and Gary Stapelman of Sioux Falls SD, and one sister-in-law, Kathy Janssen of Ft. Myers FL. Along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dean; a son Cary in 1981; a daughter Denise Naslund in 2018; grandson David Naslund in 2016; step-mother Kathryn Janssen; brother, Terry Janssen; brothers-in-law Jacob Meier and Glen Anderson; Father-in-law and mother-in law Steve and P. Edna Nordby.
