Carol Ann Becker, age 88, of Yankton, South Dakota died on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with Reverend Seth LaBounty officiating. Burial will be at the Evangelical Covenant Church Cemetery in rural Pomeroy, Iowa. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, on Friday, March 27 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
Honorary pallbearers are members of the Yankton Lions Club.
Carol was born as Pearl Carol Ann Peterson on September 8, 1937 to Orville and Pearl (Olson) Peterson. She was born and grew up on a farm near Pomeroy, IA and graduated from Pomeroy High School. Carol then attended Lab Tech Training at Northwest Institute in Minneapolis, MN, receiving an Associate’s Degree. Carol married Delmar Becker on February 22, 1957. They lived in Fort Dodge, IA for several years and Carol worked as a Medical Technician at a doctor’s office. They moved to Pocahontas, IA where they owned and operated Western Auto Hardware Store for many years. Carol and Delmar then managed several restaurants and eventually purchased their own, Becker’s Fine Foods. After they retired, they moved to Yankton. Carol ran a daycare in her home for many years and those children became part of her family.
Carol was very active in the Lions Club. She held many positions over the years and was a highly decorated Lions Club member. Carol also volunteered many hours to the Yankton Contact Center, United Way, PEO and Habitat for Humanity. Carol was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church. She was so giving of her time and was always on the go. Carol was proud of her Swedish Heritage and enjoyed baking and sewing. Most of all, Carol was proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and all they accomplished.
Carol is survived by her daughter, Carla (Randy) Hummel of Utica, SD; two grandchildren, Valerie Hummel-LaBounty (Seth) of Hartford, SD and Sam (Raelle) Hummel of Yankton; four great grandchildren: Esther, Althea and Junia LaBounty and Mileah Hummel; and the many lives she touched through her daycare and the church which she considered her family.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delmar Becker on April 29, 2004; and two children, Twyla Kleen-Becker and Timothy Becker.
Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, in care of the LPC Kitchen Fund, at 207 W. 11th St. in Yankton, SD 57078.
