Arlan Joseph Walter, age 81 of Fordyce, Nebraska, died on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Hartington Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hartington, Nebraska. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday January 26, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fordyce with Rev. Jim Keiter officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Fordyce with military honors provided by the Hartington VFW Post 5283 and the American Legion Riders. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am on Friday at the church. The Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington is assisting with the arrangements. Honorary Pallbearers are Marcus and Donna Potts, Clair and Kathy Rupiper, Ken and Toots Lockman, Mike and Denise Stevens, Della Eickhoff, and Mary Wiebelhaus. Active Pallbearers are Kurt Potts, John Potts, Brian Walter, Dean Walter, Doug Stevens, Tom Stevens, and Mike Stevens. Arlan was born on January 30, 1936 in Fordyce to Leonard and Veronica Elizabeth (Hochstein) Walter. He grew up in Fordyce and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1954. He served in the U. S. Army spending some time in Germany. After his discharge he lived in Wynot, Nebraska and helped build Gavin’s Point Dam. In 1963 Arlan and his mother moved back to Fordyce and he worked construction with Elmer Hochstein and Norman Walter. In the 1970’s he began working at the Human Service Center in Yankton, South Dakota. Arlan moved to the assisted living in Hartington in 2010 and entered the Hartington Care and Rehab Center in 2011. Arlan’s faith was very important to him as he belonged to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was active for many years in a prayer group. He volunteered in the lunch program at West Catholic School in Fordyce and enjoyed fishing, bird watching and watching baseball. Arlan is survived by a brother, Kenneth and Vicky Walter of Hatfield, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Jan Walter of Winfield, Iowa; 2 nieces, Kim Lampe and Michelle Blodgett, 2 nephews, Brian and Dean Walter. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Norman Walter.
