Duane was born November 30, 1934 in Wagner, South Dakota to Joseph and Gladys (Mach) Vitek. He attended country school and graduated from Wagner High School in 1954. Duane then attended Southern State College in Springfield, SD and later joined his dad in farming. In 1957, he entered the National Guard in Wagner and served for nine years. On June 15, 1963, Duane married Marie Ann Bouska at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor, SD. After their marriage, they lived on a farm southwest of Dante, SD for three years and then moved to a farm southeast of Tyndall, SD and finally in 1973, they purchased a farm near Scotland where they have lived ever since. Duane began working as a welder at Kolberg-Pioneer in 1971. He later became a welding instructor and would travel across the country to administer welding classes and tests. Also if there was ever a difficult job, Duane could figure how to get it done. He retired in 1997 after 26 years at Kolberg's. After retirement, Duane loved helping his sons and especially loved mowing hay. Due to declining health, he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Tripp, SD on November 29, 2012. On June 15, 2013, the entire family was able to gather and celebrate Duane and Marie Ann's 50th wedding anniversary. Duane was a member of St. George Catholic Church and the Old Iron Tractor Club. He will be remembered most for his love of family, dancing, sense of humor, auction sales and old tractors.
Duane is survived by his wife, Marie Ann of Scotland; six children: DuAnne (Chuck) Hoaglin of Scotland, Kristie Ellis of Hartford, SD, Thomas (Tanya) Vitek of Scotland, Michelle Kass of Scotland, Barbara Vitek of Blair, NE and Andrew (Becca) Vitek of Scotland; 21 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; two sisters, Jeannette Vitek and Carolyn (Dan) Kocer, both of Wagner; brother, Don Vitek of Egan, SD; sisters-in-law, Frances Honner of Tabor and Kay Bouska of Austin, TX; brother-in-law, George (Kathy) Bouska of Oregon, IL; aunt, Evelyn Kostal of Yankton; uncle, Ivan Vitek of Tabor; and many nieces and nephews.
