Kristin Vavra, age 59, of Mustang, Oklahoma and formerly of Yankton, South Dakota, passed away Monday, December 8, 2014 at the Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City after a long battle with cancer. Her family was at her side.
Funeral services are 10:00 AM, on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Vangen Lutheran Church in Mission Hill, South Dakota with Pastor Velma Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Vangen Lutheran Cemetery in Mission Hill. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, December 12 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton.
Pallbearers are David Christensen, Jon Gustad, Oren Hagen, Jerry Mikel, Sonya Mikel and Steven Vavra.
Kristin Kay Vavra was born March 9, 1955 in Yankton, South Dakota to Clayton and Ruth (Bjornebo) Gustad. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended all eight grades at Mission Hill School and graduated from Yankton High School in 1973. Kristin worked in medical records at the Yankton Medical Clinic and then later worked at Gurney's. Kristin and Thomas Vavra were united in marriage on June 26, 1976 at Vangen Lutheran Church. To this union, two children were born, Steven and Jennifer. Later when she became a grandmother, she very much enjoyed babysitting her granddaughter, Shelby.
Kristin is survived by her husband, Tom Vavra of Mustang, OK; son, Steven (Vanessa) Vavra of Gainesville, VA; daughter, Jennifer Nix of Yukon, OK; two granddaughters, Shelby Nix and Adrianna Vavra; mother, Ruth Gustad of Yankton; brother, Jon (Sarah) Gustad of Canton, SD; two sisters-in-law, Ramona (Dale) Meyers of Yankton and Carol (Joe) Reifenrath of Omaha, NE; four nephews; three nieces; uncle and aunt, James and Donna Bjornebo of Madison, SD; and several cousins.
Kristin was preceded in death by her father, Clayton Gustad on November 30, 2000; and two uncles, Philip and Paul Gustad.
The family would prefer memorials to Vangen Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.

I want you all to know how very sorry I am for your loss. Kris had such a sparkle in her eye and know how very much she will be missed ! I spent some very great high school memories and times with Kris, from spending the night in Mission Hill and expecially hanging out with friends. I wish we wouldnt have lost touch over the years, we all get so busy with our lives I just want you to know how sorry I am and know how much she will be missed
