John Anthony Thoene Jr., age 91 of Bow Valley, Nebraska, died on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Hartington, NE
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, June 27, 2008 at 10:30 am at the Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church in Bow Valley with Monsignor Ralph Steffensmeier and Rev. Michael Keating officiating. Burial will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Bow Valley. Visitation will be on Thursday from 1:00 to 5:00 pm with a rosary at 2:00 pm at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. There will be a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm at the church on Thursday. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Catholic Order of Foresters. Active Pallbearers are Jan Odens, Todd Thoene, Scott Lammers, Jeff Thoene, Tim Leise, Tommy Thoene, Keith Thoene, Jody Koch, Craig Jackson, Travis Wiehn and John Lucas.
John was born on February 25, 1917 at Bow Valley to John A. and Kathryn (Bonertz) Thoene Sr. He grew up in the Bow Valley area and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Hartington in 1934. He served in the National Guard. On June 1, 1938 John married Rose T. Uhing at Bow Valley. He farmed in the Bow Valley area until moving into Bow Valley in 1974. He owned and operated Thoene Service from 1976 to 1979.
John was a member of the Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church and was a former Trustee, choir member, and parish council member. He was a former State Chief Ranger of the Catholic Order of Foresters, former member of the Natural Resources District, Former President of the Cedar County NFO, was a Cedar Catholic School Board member for 9 years, a Wynot School Board member for 22 years, former president of the Cedar County Historical Society, was a member of the Bow Valley Park Association, and for 35 years he wrote a column in the Cedar County News. John loved to talk about politics, enjoyed playing cards and was a member of several card clubs. He was interested in all things concerning nature and he especially loved spending time with his beloved family.
John is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rose Thoene of Bow Valley, 9 children and their spouses; Darlene and Lloyd Lucas of Yankton, Diana and Larry Wiehn of Lincoln, Carol and Allen Lammers, Anthony and Carol Thoene, Karen and Denis Leise, Danny and Karen Thoene, Sylvan and Leane Thoene, Mary Lee and Randy Koch, Kathy and Mark Jackson all of Bow Valley, a daughter-in-law; Claudette (Thoene) and Doug Sternhagen of Tabor, SD, 46 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and 2 brothers; Alton "Dick" and Delores Thoene of Hartington, and Charles and Ruth Thone of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, David, 2 grandsons; Jarod and Eric Thoene, a granddaughter, Maria Thoene, and brothers Clifford and Chauncey.
