Eilene Viola Swensen, age 96, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Avera Yankton Care Center.
Funeral services are 2:00 PM, on Monday, September 29, 2014 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend David Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Sunday, September 28 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral.
Pallbearers are Cleo Anderson, Ivan Anderson, Jay Erickson, Robin Haffey, Randy Svendsen and Dennis Wolfe. Honorary pallbearers are Maja Erickson, Autumn Erickson, Olivia Haffey, Craig, Jerry and Christian Swensen.
Eilene was born September 12, 1918 in Freeman, South Dakota to Alfred and Lizzie (Wenzlaff) Johnson. She married Luvern Swensen on June 30, 1939 in Yankton. After their marriage, they purchased the farm north of Mission Hill which was originally homesteaded by Luvern's father. Together they farmed and raised cattle, hogs and chickens. Eilene enjoyed working in her large garden and selling the produce on the farmer's market. For many years, she also cleaned houses and several business including the Yankton Medical Clinic and Wilcockson Eye Associates. Eilene and Luvern were members of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Moose Lodge and the Antique Auto Association where they drove their Model A in many parades. She enjoyed traveling and especially treasured the trips with her daughter to Norway, Denmark, Sweden and New York City. Eilene also loved dancing, baking, playing cards and visiting with her neighbors and friends. She was a resident at Avera Yankton Care Center for the last 10 years. Her family is very grateful for the phenomenal kind and loving care given to her.
Eilene is survived by three children: Marilyn Cragun of Yankton, Gary (Debbie) Swensen of Yankton and Robin (Leo) Haffey of Nashville, TN; six grandchildren: Jay (Nancy) Erickson, Autumn Erickson, Craig (Kristen) Swensen, Jerry (Angela) Swensen, Christian Swensen and Olivia Renae Haffey; four great grandchildren; and a brother, Roy (Lois) Anderson of Yankton.
Eilene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Luvern on March 27, 1987; brother, Ray Anderson and sister, Lillian Westergaard.
