Betty E. Steffen, age 87, of Crofton, NE, died on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Avera Sister James Nursing Home in Yankton, SD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday July 2, 2008 at 10:30 am at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Constance, NE with Rev. David Fulton officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Constance. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3:00 to 8:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 7:30pm at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
Pallbearers are Jason Wiechmann, Aaron Steffen, Matt Bruening, Chris Bruening, Taylor Suess, and Matt Tereshinski.
Betty was born on March 16, 1921 at Fordyce, NE to Henry and Cecilia (Kremer) Bockholt. She grew up in the Fordyce area and attended grade school in Constance. She married Walter L. Steffen on September 24, 1947 at Constance. They farmed in the Fordyce area until they retired and moved into Crofton in 1993. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Constance, the Guild and the Christian Mothers. She was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed baseball. She enjoyed doing needle work and playing cards. She was active in the Crofton Senior Citizen Center.
Betty is survived by 8 children and their spouses; Cecile and Doug Wiechmann of Worland, Wyoming, Carole Steffen of Lincoln, Clifford and Patricia Steffen of Fordyce, Susan and Richard Bruening of St. Helena, Maureen Steffen of Yankton, Alan and JoAnn Steffen of Fordyce, Jeffrey and Jolene Steffen of Crofton, Jolene and Neal Suess of Columbus, NE, 15 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and a brother Roman Bockholt of Sioux City, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Walter on July 24, 2002 at the age of 81, 2 grand daughters, Brittney and Morgan Steffen, and 3 brothers Leo, Sylvester and Norbert Bockholt.
