Leslie "Bones" Slowey, age 89, of Kingsport, Tennessee and formerly of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 11, 2017.
Graveside services are 2:00 PM, on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yankton with Reverend Larry Regynski officiating. The Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting with the arrangements.
Leslie was born October 29, 1927 in Sioux City, Iowa to Patrick and Katherine (Donnelly) Slowey. He graduated from Vermillion High School in 1945 and enlisted into the Navy shortly after. He worked for the Railroad and was employed with the Homestake Mining Company. Leslie was a Federal Mine Inspector with MSHA until 1993 with over 20 years of service. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed playing horseshoes, loved football, and sitting on his porch watching the birds, deer and enjoying nature. As a young man, he had many mentions in local newspapers for his high bowling averages and was still bowling at the age of 89. When he was a young boy, he was a "pin setter" at the local bowling alley before there were machines to do it. Leslie was a wonderful father and was always there for his children. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always enjoyed making others laugh. He cherished his pets and was always known to have his dog with him, on his lap.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children: Elmira (Jim) Petersen of Wentworth, SD, Lori (Scott) Roberts of Cedar Bluff, VA, Corey Slowey of Kingsport, TN, Chris Slowey (Denise Gibson) of Aurora, CO, Derrick Slowey (Ruth Ann Vandyke) of Blountville, TN, Craig Slowey of Lead, SD, and Patrick Slowey of Rapid City, SD ; eleven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; best friend and companion, "Rascal"; and several nieces and nephews.
Leslie was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lucy White and Harriet Millage; and brother, Phil Slowey.
