Phyllis Skalberg, age 93, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
A memorial service will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with Reverend Ron Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, February 26, 2016 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6:30 PM followed by an Eastern Star service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service on Saturday at the church.
Phyllis Skalberg was born October 14, 1922 in Wausa, Nebraska, to Clyde and Esther (Fransen) Bengtson. She grew up in Wausa and graduated from Wausa High School in 1940. She attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska for a few years and began working at the bank in Wausa. She married Leland "Lee" Skalberg on June 20, 1946 in Wausa. After their marriage they moved to Orchard, Nebraska where Phyllis worked part time at the bank in Orchard. They moved to Yankton in 1961 and Phyllis began working at the Yankton County ASCS office which she continued for 18 years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Yankton, Order of the Eastern Star, and a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her faith was very important to her and she enjoyed helping at church and also volunteering for Meals on Wheels. Phyllis was always very welcoming and was a great hostess. She was a hardworking woman who loved cooking, making crafts, sewing, but mostly being with her family. She loved her grandchildren, and was always there for her family.
Survivors include her two children: Dave (Brenda Young) Skalberg of Mitchell, South Dakota and Brenda (John) Janssen of Emery, South Dakota; three grandchildren: Christopher (Missy Bunger) Janssen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Emily (Kevin) Petoske of Sioux Falls; and Katie (Ross) Petrick of Garretson, South Dakota; four great grandchildren: Reese, Grayson, Sam, and Lucy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 69 years, Lee on December 15, 2015; son, Brent; three sisters: Marian Carlson, Jean Bengtson, and Maxine Olson.

I was sorry to hear your mother passed away. I always enjoyed visiting with her over the years and she was a great friend to my mother.
