Doris Jean Silvey, age 81, of Yankton, South Dakota died Friday, January 15, 2010 at Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton.

Burial will be in the Vangen Lutheran Cemetery in Mission Hill. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Tuesday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service and video tribute at 7:00 PM. Jean was born on March 13, 1928 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota to George and Malinda Long of Mission Hill. She graduated from Yankton High School and married Charles Delbert Silvey in Troy, Kansas on January 17, 1947. They were married for nearly 50 years. Jean was a creative spirit who expressed herself in many ways; as a writer of poetry delivered to family and friends during special occasions, as a creative quilter who once delivered six beautiful quilts to her children for Christmas and this story was published in "Quilters Magazine", and as a ceramic and stained glass artist and jewelry maker. She traveled the country as an Army wife while raising six healthy and successful children, all of whom she was most proud. Jean was a faithful Lutheran and active member at Vangen Lutheran Church in Mission Hill, where she was baptized. But most of all, Jean Silvey was a consummate and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. These roles were her avocation and her passion.
Our dear sweet mother will be deeply missed by 5 children: Susan Cox of Palm Springs, CA, Katherine Turner of Aviano, Italy, William (Barbara) Silvey of Trinidad, CO, Scott (Rebecca) Silvey of Atlanta, GA and Malissa Silvey of Kansas City, MO; daughter-in-law, Mary Silvey of Fairbanks, AK; 9 grandchildren: Cassandra (Richard) Ramsey, Kristin (Margo) Ramirez, Charles Delbert "Chip" Silvey III, Daniel Fox, William Scott (Stephanie) Silvey, Zachary (Callie) Silvey, Sarah Silvey, Raven Silvey and Calypso Silvey; 6 great grandchildren: Jordon and Josh Ramirez, Thea and Kyla Ramsey, Haylie Silvey of Texas and Haley Silvey of Louisiana; 3 sisters: Fern (Terry) Bye of Minneapolis, MN, Ruby Cutts of Yankton, and Alyce Walraven of Lakewood, CA; a brother, Robert (Pat) Long of Milwaukee, WI; and 2 step sisters, June Ayers of Vancouver, Canada and Marilyn (Dick) Chapman of Centennial, CO.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Charles on April 23, 1994; oldest son, Charles Delbert Silvey II on October 30, 1999; and sister, Beth (Medeck) Snow.

Dear Missy,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. I did not realize until late last night that your mom had passed and it was too late for me to attend the prayer service. As I watched the wonderful video tribute I noticed the picture of your mom with the wreath behind her. I remember when your mom gave my mom a wreath like that for Christmas and how we all thought it was the most beautiful wreath we had ever seen. I also have fun memories of times spent at your house. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I would love to hear from you sometime so we could catch up.
Take Care,
Kim (Huntley) Eide

Jean was such a wonderful person and so much fun! I have loved her since the first time we visited you when we were kids and you were living in Colorado. She just made life so much fun for everyone near her. I know that this is a difficult time, but we rejoice with you in the knowledge that she is now in heaven with so many of her friends and family. Take care.
Love,
Barry and Erna Huitema

Dear Aunt Ruby, Thinking of you and all the wonderful memories of Jean, she was so vibrant and full of "life". Please relay my sympathy to all the Silvey children I have only met a few~and many years ago. Mom (June) had called me last evening with the news, just wanted to send my love and condolences. My love to you and all the Cutts' family. Danette Harttert (Larson)
Dearest Jean-
You were the unofficial mother to so many. You and Dude opened your home to an army of teens that treasured our hours together later on in life.
You were gentle, kind, accepting, and tolerant. You were weird.
And I love and loved you for it. I was so thrilled to be able to tell you how much fun you provided to us and how very much I love you when I saw you in May. You responded with your usual humbleness but I could tell that you were pleased.
I will miss you, Jean. And I will pass on your kindness and tolerance to as many people, especially young people, as I can.
hugs, and hugs, and hugs- Melody Newman (a shark)
ARVIN AND I EXTEND OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO ALL OF JEANS FAMILY AND FRIENDS, SHE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED.
