Walter Allan Sayler, age 76, of Lesterville, South Dakota, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center in Menno, South Dakota.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Friday, May 9, 2008, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation with the family present is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, on Thursday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home. Visitation continues one hour prior to the funeral service.
Pallbearers are Jeff Becker, Tim Becker, Jeff Sayler, Nick Sayler, Mike Schenkel and Monte Smith.
Allan was born June 16, 1931 in Lesterville, South Dakota to Walter G. and Pauline (Gall) Sayler. He attended Northstar country school and graduated from Scotland High School in 1949. Allan then enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard a hospital ship, the USS Repose, during the Korean War. On June 27, 1955, he married Betty Becker in Yankton. After their marriage, he attended technical school in Milford, NE studying agriculture. Allan then moved back home and farmed with his dad. While farming, Allan also worked at the Utica Lumberyard as a carpenter, Joe's Fish Market and sold Pride Seed Corn. In December 2005, he became a resident of the Menno-Olivet Care Center. Allan was a member of the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 in Yankton, the American Legion Post in Lesterville, and the Lesterville Rural Fire Department.
Allan is survived by his wife, Betty Sayler of Menno; 4 sons: Kenny (Kathy) Sayler of Tabor, Kevin (Natasha) Sayler of Lesterville, Keith Sayler of Lesterville and Kelly Sayler of Chandler, AZ; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and a brother, Maynard "Mike" (Janet) Sayler of Yankton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
