Mildred Rose Nelson, age 96, of Yankton, South Dakota, died September 14, 2013, at Avera Brady Health & Rehabilitation in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Yankton, South Dakota, with Reverend Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitation with the family present is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Wednesday.
Pallbearers are Chris Nelson, Mark Nelson, Dennis Nelson, Darrell Nelson, David Nelson, and Delmar Nelson.
Mildred Rose Nelson was born February 1, 1917, to Walter and Rose (Wolkow) Schanck in Erwin, South Dakota. She grew up in Erwin and graduated from Erwin High School. She moved to Yankton where she worked her way through Yankton College graduating with a Teacher's Certificate. She began teaching at Gunderson #15 Country Grade School north of Yankton. She met Harold C. Nelson at a Lawrence Welk Dance in Yankton, and they married on September 20, 1940. After their marriage Mildred helped on the farm just north of Yankton where she continued to live until she moved to Ethan, South Dakota, to live with her daughter in 2011 at the age of 93.
Mildred was a devoted mother and wife. Her life revolved around her family. She was a true caretaker at heart. She was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Yankton, the Pershing Extension Club, and was active in 4-H. Education was very important to her, and she loved to read. She was a great cook and loved to make treats. She also enjoyed listening to the SDSU Jackrabbits football games, and playing cards, especially Slapjack with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter Charlene (Lewis) Bainbridge of Ethan, South Dakota; five grandchildren: Heidi Bainbridge, Matthew Bainbridge, Neal (Tara) Bainbridge and their daughter Charlie; Patrick Nelson; Andrew (Angel) Nelson and his children: Andrew, Breyton, Anessa, and step-son Payton; and one sister, Nell (LaVerne) Tollefson of Huron, South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold on March 8, 1987; son Lonnie; two brothers: Edward and John; one sister, Margaret; and brother-in-law, Melvin.
