Long time Hartington, Nebraska resident, Doris Marjorie (McQuinn) Nelson passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Brookestone Village in Omaha, NE.
A Memorial Service will be on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hartington with the Rev. Gary Kimm officiating. Burial of her ashes will be in the Coleridge City Cemetery. Wintz Funeral Home of Hartington is in charge of arrangements.
Doris was born December 8, 1915 on a farm southeast of Hartington to Charles Matthew and Lydia Agnes (Woodard) McQuinn. The fifth of seven daughters, Doris and her sisters worked hard to help their parents on the farm. From an early age, she was an avid reader. She graduated from Hartington High School and attended Wayne State College after which she taught country school. On January 7, 1936, Doris married Arthur (Art) Nelson in Creighton, Nebraska. Art was a construction worker, and they moved often following his construction jobs. During World War II, the couple lived in Bellflower California where Art found work in the shipping yards. After the war, the couple moved back to Hartington to be near family. With the exception of Leona who died at a young age after childbirth, the McQuinn sisters all settled and raised their children in Cedar County. Doris was a member of the First Congregational Church and active in woman's fellowship and church circle. She enjoyed caring for her family, spending time with her sisters, and in fair weather she was an avid walker.
She is survived by her five children and spouses, Jim and Alyce Nelson of Norfolk, Kay and Peter Clos, Sue Morrison, Pam and Tom Hall, and Jon Nelson all of Omaha; 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Following a memorial service at the First Congregation Church she will be interred at the Coleridge Cemetery next to her husband.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, Mrs. Deward (Della) Erickson, Mrs. Leon (Charlotte) Dougherty, Mrs. Arnold (Dorothy) Frerichs, Mrs. Ivan (Leona) Ward, Mrs. Mark (Eva) Dendinger, and Mrs. Alvin (Maxine) Kramer, her husband Art, and great-granddaughter Meghan Mizner.

Messages will be reviewed and posted within 1 business day.

I can remember your Mother so well because she was one of my first teachers in District 29 north at rural Hartington, and it seemed like it was she that I saw so many times when we visited my parents in Hartington Werner & Theresa Burbach & I believe he was an officer of that school district & had hired her. I remember the entire McQuin family, that lived south of Hartington. With sincere condolences,
Reiny & Martha Burbach
