Mildred Hillman, age 91 of Crofton, Nebraska, died on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Avera Sr. James Care Center in Yankton, SD.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton with the Rev. Les Parmenter officiating. Burial will be in the Crofton City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 3-7:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton. Visitation will continue on Saturday one hour prior to services at the Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Richard Gartner, Craig Gartner, Ted Hillman, Tracy Campbell, Scott Roesler and Ted Skovly. The Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Colin Gartner, Kay Campbell, Cheryl Roesler, Elizabeth Engstedt, Rachel Guenther, Adam Hillman, Ted Bogner, Adrienne Hillman, Angela Fann, Justin Hillman, Leslie Dollinger, Richelle Woockman and Nicholas Woockman.

Mildred was born on September 29, 1918 at Centerville, Iowa to David and Elizabeth (Hasty) Hedberg. She moved to the Crofton area as a young girl and graduated from the Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, Nebraska in 1935. As a teenager she worked for Mabel Ross who owned a Confectionary & Soda Fountain in Crofton, a favorite kid's hangout. She worked for the Union Telephone Company in Crofton until her marriage to Leslie Hillman on May 20, 1937 in Yankton, SD. After her marriage she worked with her husband in his hatchery in Crofton. In 1956 she began working as a waitress at the Black Steer in Yankton and also worked at Sioux Radio, which is now Vishay Dale Electronics. On September 5, 1961, Mildred's husband died at the age of 46. In 1964 she moved to Loveland, Colorado and began working for Hewlett Packard Company until she retired and moved to the Phoenix area. She moved to Crofton in 1997 and had been a resident at the Good Samaritan Center in Bloomfield since October of 2009.

Mildred was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Crofton. She loved to garden, collect rocks, work crossword puzzles and follow the stock market.

Mildred is survived by 6 children and their spouses, Carolynn and Jon Gartner of Crofton; Roberta and Dennis Engstedt of Crofton; Sandra Hillman of Kearney, Nebraska; Joy Hillman of Phoenix, Arizona; Thomas and Deborah Hillman of Crofton; Diane Woockman of Crofton; 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, a brother, John Dallman of Loveland, Colorado; and a sister, Ruth Lewis of Romoland, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Monte Blair Hillman, and 2 brothers, Montie Dallman and Robert Hedberg.

So sorry to hear the passing of my cousin Mildred..I have fond memories of her and Les as I was growing up in Crofton. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family and friends.
