David Carl Colling age 83 of Laurel, Nebraska died on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at the Hillcrest Care Center in Laurel, NE.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Laurel with the Rev. Rachelle McCalla officiating. The Hartington VFW will provide military rites outside of Church following the funeral service. Cremation will occur after the funeral and burial of his cremains will be at a later date at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Redfield, SD. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-7:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visitation will continue on Saturday at church one hour prior to services.
Pallbearers will be Bryan Morten, Christopher Morten, Taylor Morten, Darrell Dreesen, Marcel Sudbeck and Ernest Jueden.
David Carl Colling was born on September 26, 1931 on the family farm north of Randolph, Nebraska to Peter and Esther (Swanson) Colling. He attended grade school at District 50, north of Randolph until 1941 when the family moved to a farm eight miles east of Hartington, in March of 1941. David graduated from Branch School District 14 and from Hartington High School in 1949 after spending his junior year attending Randolph High School. He participated in track while at Hartington H. S. and was a member of the National Honor Society. David was inducted into the U.S. Air Force on September 18, 1951 at Omaha, NE. He served in the 28th A&E Maintenance Squadron for four years, including two years in Fairbanks, Alaska and additional time in Guam. He was Honorably Discharged on September 17, 1955. Upon returning to Hartington, he resumed farming with his parents east of Hartington and continued farming after his fathers death in 1965. David married Joan Dean on February 10, 1979 in Hartington where they farmed until 2007 before moving into Laurel. Joan died on October 19, 2007 at the age of 72 years.
David has continued to reside in Laurel, but retained his VFW membership at Hartington Post #5283. David served as V.F.W. Post Commander and other offices and was a faithful member of the Military Honor Guard, also serving in many Veterans Day Parades and Memorial Day Services in northeast Nebraska. He served as a liturgist and usher at his church in Laurel, as well as a Meals on Wheels Volunteer. He was a kind and humble person and enjoyed visiting with his friends. He also enjoyed playing pool at the Senior Center.
David is survived by his sister Judith E. and husband Garold N. Morten of Lisle, IL; 2 nieces Jayne Morten Zoboski of Plainfield, IL, Jeanie Martin of Palm Bay, FL; 3 nephews Bryan and Chris Morten of Lisle, IL, and Jeffrey Colling of Yellville, AR; one step daughter Vicki Miller of Alford, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joan; one sister Faye; two brothers Aaron and Vincent Colling.
