Demarus "De" Carlson , age 75 of Crofton, Nebraska, died on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at the Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, SD.

There will be a visitation from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Gothenburg Cemetery in Gothenburg, NE. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Museum of Fur Trade in Chadron, NE; the American Cancer Society and the Crofton Community Foundation.

De was born on May 8, 1938 at O'Neill. NE to William Fredrick and Ethel May (White) Wefso. She grew up in the Atkinson and Stuart NE area and graduated from Atkinson High School in 1955. She attended Colorado State University for 2 years and graduated from Kansas State University in 1959 with a degree in dietetics. De married James W. Carlson on June 7, 1958 in Atkinson. After her husband's graduation from Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine in June of 1959 they moved to Crofton where she and Dr. Carlson owned and operated Stockman's Veterinary Clinic until 1985. They also owned and operated the Upper Missouri Trading Company since 1971.

De was a member of the United Church of Christ in Crofton, PEO and Questers in Yankton, founding board member of Operation Game Thief, board member of the Crofton Community Foundation, board member of the Bureau of Educational Lands and Funds and was chairman for the past 4 years, field representative for the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, founding board member of the Nebraska Sportsman Council, avid hunter and sportswoman, Crofton Rural Fire Board member when the city and rural boards merged and EMT on the Crofton Rescue Squad. She was very active in the Republican Party and was a former candidate for Lt. Governor and Senator for District 19. She was the National Committee Woman for Nebraska for 8 years and was a member for the Executive Committee for the Republican Party.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. James W. Carlson of Crofton; 2 children, Scott and Deborah Carlson of Atwood, KS; Sheryl and Kevin Uerling of St. Louis, MO; 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and a sister, Lodema Hodge of Mesa, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law Norm Hodge.
