Daryl Joseph Bruening, age 68 of Missouri Valley, Iowa, formerly of St. Helena, Nebraska, died on Friday, February 19, 2016 at his residence after a 3 month battle with cancer.
Funeral Services will be on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Korisko Larkin Staskiewicz Funeral Home in Omaha. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at 11:30 am on Friday, February 26, 2016 at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in St. Helena with military honors provided by the Wynot American Legion Post 31. The Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington is assisting with the arrangements.
Daryl, the oldest of 10 children, was born on March 23, 1947 at Yankton, SD to Bernard Arnold and Geraldine Marie (Maly) Bruening. He was raised on the family farm and attended St. Mary's Catholic School in St. Helena and graduated from Wynot High School in 1965. He attended Central Tech Institute Airline School in Kansas City from 1966 to 1967. He began working at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago in April of 1967. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. On March 6, 1971 he married Mary Jane Malterre in Oahu, Hawaii. In 1978 they moved to Omaha where he was employed at Eppley Airport until his retirement in 2012. Daryl married Lily Mejia on March 9, 2007 in Omaha. Daryl was a man of God and loved sharing various scriptures from the bible with his family and friends. Daryl enjoyed living out in the country on his acreage where he took care of his many animals and tended to his large garden. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, and most of all cherished time spent with his family.
Daryl is survived by his wife, Lily of Missouri Valley; 2 children, Michael and Erin Bruening and their children, Elizabeth and Nicolas of Omaha; Malia and Brien Pearson and their children, Kalan, Brody and Jace of Omaha; 7 siblings, Ken and Mary Bruening of Aurora, CO; Jan and H.B. Ewersmann of Little Rock, AR,; Carla and Jim Wintz of Hartington, NE; Tom and Pam Bruening of Norfolk, NE; Lynn and Jude Hobza of Omaha; Joe and Juanita Bruening of St. Helena, NE and Mary and Duane Miner of Seward, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Ron and Jimmy.
