Pauline L. Blackinton, age 92, of Yankton, South Dakota, passed away very peacefully on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at her home with her son at her bedside.
Memorial services are 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 16, 2010, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Gary Stephens officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the memorial service. It was Pauline's wish to donate her body to the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in Vermillion.
Pauline Lucille Hannan was born in Danbury, Iowa, June 4, 1917 and was the eldest of four children born to Glen and Goldie May (Campbell) Hannan. In the 1930's, the Hannan family left Iowa and settled in Northern California. After graduating from high school, Pauline received a teaching degree from Southern California College. She married Clark Blackinton on March 12, 1945 and they settled in the Los Angeles area to raise their five children. Pauline was very active in church work, and served faithfully in the youth group and as a Sunday School Superintendent. When Clark semi-retired in 1964, they moved south to Valley Center, California, where they developed a private airstrip and enjoyed taking family trips in their private airplane. In 1978, she took up jogging which she loved and was known locally as the jogging grandmother. She loved her hiking club and thoroughly enjoyed her 5 - 8 mile hikes even well into her 80's, and also was an avid gardener. She was a very dedicated wife and mother and frequently hosted dinners for others. When a local family was homeless she invited the large family with 7 children to live with them for several months until they could find a home. She loved caring for young children and volunteered her time caring for them in the church nursery. In 2002, Pauline moved to Yankton, South Dakota where she continued her love for walking, gardening and church involvement. She loved the seasons and particularly enjoyed seeing the snow fall and she eagerly watched the progress of her tulip bed each spring. She was a sponsor for many youth activities at Emmanuel Evangelical Church, participating with ski trips to the Rockies as she actively lived out her faith. Pauline truly valued her many friends from the past and also her new friends made in Yankton.
She is survived by four children: Helen (Gary) Stephens of Montrose, Colorado, Lucile Blackinton of Yankton, Joe (Sheryl) Blackinton of Yankton, and Lois (Can) Lam of Vista, California; 8 grandchildren: Shawna Battaglia of Montrose, Seth Gillespie of Emeryville, California, Amy (Bob) Strachan of Nashville, Tennessee, Andrew (Alison) Stephens of Hong Kong, Katie (Ben) McKie of England, Jessica Blackinton and Jodi Blackinton both of Sioux Falls, and Jacob Lok Chi Stephens of Montrose; and 4 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Clark; one daughter, Linda Mae Blackinton; two sisters, Violet Fuller and Viola Wolf; and one brother, Darrell Hannan.
Her spirit of love and compassion will live on and she will be sorely missed.
